Our Story
Middletown Christian Church was established in 1836 on a site about a half-mile from the place we now call home. We’re proud of our long and stable history in this community.
From its humble roots on the American frontier, across two world wars and numerous expansions, and into the second millennium at our current location, Middletown Christian Church has sought to preach the gospel and serve its neighbors. One theme has remained constant over the years – our passion for making disciples of Jesus Christ and his power to transform lives.
During the Civil War, the modest red brick church built by members' own hands was used as a hospital and camp for an African-American cavalry unit. The church’s second building is now the home of the Summit Academy in Middletown, a school for children with learning differences, founded by congregational members. In the late 1990's, the congregation purchased land and dedicated a new sanctuary and facility at our present location.
The completion of our new 28,000 square foot children’s wing in December 2006 is a reflection of our continued commitment to growing faithful children, youth and families. The expansion to our Valley Station campus in the spring of 2009 has multiplied our efforts to transform lives into southwest Louisville.
Though we are proud of our past, we are not preoccupied by it. We know what year it is, and we have a loving relationship with the God who makes all things new. God has been faithful to make this congregation new again and again.
And God’s not through with us yet!
