Who We Are

Welcome to Middletown Christian Church’s web-site. Perhaps you’ve landed here because you’re new to Louisville, and you’re seeking a new church home. Perhaps you’ve landed here because you heard about something going on at MCC and just wanted to learn a bit more about us. Perhaps you’ve landed here because you’re experiencing a hunger you don’t remember feeling before … a hunger that has you exploring Jesus Christ – maybe for the first time. Regardless of why you’re here, we’re glad you stopped by.

What’s happening at MCC is a transition from a church membership model to a discipleship model. Under the membership model the goal is to get people to become members of the church. “Get them to join. Get them involved. Get them to feel they belong.” Get people as thoroughly enmeshed in the structure and the work of the institution of the church as possible.

This goes along with the assumption that if you can bring people into the church all sorts of wonderful things will happen. The church budget will get met. The pastor’s salaries will get paid. People will meet and make friends with lots of other nice people. There will be lots of folks in the pews on Sunday morning.

What’s missing though in the membership model is spiritual growth and the greater mission of the church to reach the world for Christ. The discipleship model is less concerned about gaining new members as it is making disciples of Christ. Discipleship, not church membership, is the important thing here.

We exist to help people become disciples of Jesus Christ who can be sent back into the world as ambassadors for Christ. Instead of enlisting people to serve the religious institution, the institution is here to serve people – by challenging and encouraging and equipping them to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

The bottom line is that we do not just want to add members to the church. The vision God has given us is much bigger than this. We want to be a place where people experience the power of God and have their lives transformed by that power. We want to be a place where people discover God’s plan for their life and use those gifts in a way that fulfils them. The church exists for the benefit of world, and not the other way around! Jesus is our Lord and serving him is our passion!

It is my prayer that you will find what you’re looking for in a church home or simply in a connection with Christ in your visit to our web-site. And, if you are in the Louisville area, I pray you will visit one of our worship services soon. Consider this my personal invitation.

In Christ,
David Emery
